Now a days, you can take your career pretty far with digital art. If you just Google "digital art" you'll see page after page of websites that display a lot of different types of art. One site, http://dam-berlin.de/, is pretty cool in that they show pictures, animations, installations, and more. Digital art is becoming more and more popular and it makes me curious as to where that leaves other art forms? Is digital art going to replace photography or painting? If people can just sit at a computer and make something that looks like they spent days standing at a canvas, will that eventually stop painting all together? It's interesting to think about other art forms ceasing to exist, but with the rise of the digital world I guess you never know what could happen in the future.

Symmetric drawing

I was on StumbleUpon today and came across this video...

It's an artist who draws symmetrically on both sides of a paper. It's not the best quality, but the process is pretty cool and I think you could make some really interesting pictures this way. I'm sure you could create very similar works that he's making by using that tool on Sumo Paint and making whole pictures.

During the last class when we watched the music video of the woman in bed, all I could think about was Adele's music video "Chasing Pavements". It's the same idea as walking when actually not moving, but it's not done in stop motion. I liked the effect of the video shown in class because it must have taken a much longer time to create.

Some of the pictures aren't that cool and I wouldn't have assumed they were Photoshopped, but there are a few that are hard to believe just appear like that. I especially like the rose picture and the ball of life. The water ones are pretty cool too, because it's not easy to get pictures like that. You need to have an extremely fast shutter speed and know when to snap the shot. I like this site because it's kind of like a play on reality--it's not always easy to decipher reality from things that aren't really there and visa versa.

After going to the art review about contemporary art (and being throughly disappointed...) I decided to try to find something at least a little more interesting than the things he showed in his presentation. I was using StumbleUpon to find something and I came across this site:

It's really interesting because it's using the human body in a lot of different, and weird, ways. It's taking things we see often, such as paper or bubbles, and adding them to the body to make them seem transformed. Some people might argue whether or not it's considered art, but I think it's definitely interesting to look at!

Stop motion

I've been trying to come up with ideas about what to do my stop motion project on. I remembered seeing this spaghetti western YouTube video a little while ago, so I went to find it. I did find it, and to my surprise, it's by the same guy PES that you showed us in class.

I'm trying to figure out what I can do with my digital camera seeing as the last time I made a video I only used images I found on the internet. I'm still thinking, but hopefully I can come up with something at least a little original.

Virtual space

I decided to type "virtual space" into Google and see what came up. The first site was this: http://www.spacewander.com/USA/english.html

It's actually pretty cool; it's a view from a space ship and you actually see the perspective of what it would be like to be inside during take off. There's a lot of different examples of virtual space, but it's kind of funny this site came up first because when it was first brought up in class, it was exactly what I was thinking of--space and rockets.

So, what exactly is digital media? We see it around us everyday in many different forms. You can read the newspaper online, stream music, or watch YouTube videos until your eyes hurt. Here's the definition of something we know so well...

"Digital media (as opposed to analog media) usually refers to electronic media that work on digital codes. Today, computing is primarily based on the binary numeral system. In this case digital refers to the discrete states of "0" and "1" for representing arbitrary data. Computers are machines that (usually) interpret binary digital data as information and thus represent the predominating class of digital information processing machines. Digital media ("Formats for presenting information" according to Wiktionary:Media) like digital audio, digital video and other digital "content" can be created, referred to and distributed via digital information processing machines. Digital media represents a profound change from previous (analog) media.
Digital data is per se independent of its interpretation (hence representation). An arbitrary sequence of digital code like "0100 0001" might be interpreted as the decimal number 65, the hexadecimal number 41 or the glyph "A". See also: ASCII, Code.
Florida's digital media industry association, Digital Media Alliance Florida, defines digital media as "the creative convergence of digital arts, science, technology and business for human expression, communication, social interaction and education"."

Digital media port

While we're not sure if the "Digital Media Port" on Sony's new line of A/V receivers is anything more than a glorified USB port, it looks like it won't be left unused for long, with the company wasting no time in announcing a range of accessories that'll take advantage of it. Likely to attract the most attention is the $100 TDM-IP1 iPod dock (pictured above), which isn't the first iPod-happy device we've seen from Sony, but is still a rare enough occurrence to make us to a double-take. Rounding out the line-up is the $80 TDM-BT1 Bluetooth audio adapter (check it out after the break), the $200 TDM-NC1 WiFi network audio adapter for streaming music from your PC, and the sure-to-be-best-seller TDM-NW1 Network Walkman cradle, which will set you back $50. Look for the Bluetooth and Network Walkman accessories to be the first to roll out in March, with the iPod dock following in May, and the WiFi adapter bringing up the rear in June.

Art event #2

The Rory Kennedy speech was really interesting in that she explored the range of emotions and experiences that have to do with women. She started her passion for film-making when she attended college at Brown. She was a women's study major and had an interest in social issues. After her last paper about crack mothers, she filmed them in a way that showed them trying to get help vs. what the news was saying. She eventually found a producer and raised the money for that first film. She titled the film Women of Substance and it took 2 years to film. In total, she has made 23 documentaries. To name a few:

American Hollow, which is about domestic violence in Mississippi, is heart wrenching because she gets inside a family that has to deal with hardships every day of their lives.

A Boy's Life, which "family is the source of the problem" is about a welfare change and how it would effect children with mental issues. It also takes place in Mississippi and deals with a 7 year old boy who was out of control but couldn't get the social services he needed.

Pandemic (Facing Aids), which is about the global aids epidemic. She traveled to 5 different countries to get footage of different people with aids and showed the physical hardships that they deal with is nothing compared to the psychological aspect that they deal with.

Ghost of Abu Ghraib, which is the "steepest fall of grace" is about going into filming thinking the people as monsters but realizing she connects to them and was surprised by their humanity.

Election

Of course everyone has been involved in the election somehow in the past few days. Last night I was watching the results with some friends and one had his laptop. We were watching FOX and it surprised me just how fast the laptop was in finding out the electoral votes and such. For the most part, he was able to find out the information before the television stations even updated the numbers. You didn't have to be anywhere near a tv to find out stats and see clippings from the election...you could have just done everything from your computer. It makes me wonder what new technologies will emerge in the future. Will tvs become obsolete? I'd like to think that with the advances that come along things that we use everyday will become less and less used until they're no longer needed at all.

When I think about digital alteration, the show America's Next Top Model immediately comes to mind. It's a group of women competing to become the winner of a model agency contract and the next "Covergirl". They have a photo shoot every week and Tyra Banks, the host, chooses the picture she thinks is the best for each girl. There is never a picture that isn't altered in some way, so the models never really know exactly how they look behind the camera. Each picture is beautiful in it's own way, and even if a model isn't that pretty without the makeup and lights, their picture is always stunning. I don't find it fair that they're getting paid to take pictures and look a certain way, but all their pictures are touched up to make them look perfect. As long as they're tall and skinny, I feel like almost anyone can do what they do.

Manipulation

When it comes to picture manipulation, digital media has made it extremely easy to change pictures in such a slight way that sometimes it's too realistic to even notice. On the other hand, it's also easy to create something that looks aesthetically pleasing, but are clearly unrealistic. For example:

It's obvious that this isn't a real picture, but it looks really neat just the same.

Now, it's a lot harder to tell that something has been done to this picture. For fashion, they manipulate pictures all the time to make people look a certain way. Just by shaping her eyebrows, changing the color of her lips and eyeshadow, and softening her skin's appearance, she is transformed into a more pleasing look. Nowadays with magazines for instance, young girls are misinformed about how they are supposed to look. They see pictures of models that are completely manipulated, making it seem like they're just naturally missing shoulder blades, have a perfect tan, ridiculously flat stomachs, and so on. No one really looks like that, not even the models that are in the pictures. By changing the way we look, we're giving false impressions and making people, especially young girls, feel like they have to look a certain way.

Music

Today we talked about music a bit and it was pretty interesting because most people nowadays know the big bands and all the popular singers that are on the radio. However, what is there out there to help us find new music? Personally, I am always on Imeem and Pandora. These two sites are ways to listen to the music you know and find related music that are more undercover and unheard of. Pandora is especially cool because if you type in an artist or a song, it will create a radio station that has songs with the same melodies. You can use sites such as Limewire or Bearshare to download songs, but they're not able to search for new music based on what you already like. I'd like to think that I know a wide variety of music and a lot of that has to do with digital media. Without sites like Imeem or Pandora, there's really no other way that I would be able to find new bands or artists as easily as I do.

Future robots?

I've been thinking about where humans are headed since class on Tuesday. All the talk about chips inplanted in the head, eye cameras, and other things that basically transform humans into computers...aka, robots. There are so many movies out there that depict what life would be like if robots were here-- the top 5 according to the Times Online are 5. Robocop, 4. Virtuosity, 3. Knight Rider, 2. A Space Odyssey (2001), and 1. The Terminator. There's a list of 50 movies with robots, 50! Apparently film directors are already ahead in the times and are creating what they believe the world could be like with robots. I'm not such a big fan of robots. Sure, they're cool and can do things more efficiently, quicker, and so on...but I look at it as people becoming even more lazy. Unless there's a good reason we need robots around, I don't think they should just take over peoples' jobs. It's scary to think about humans becoming the robots, which is an entirely different thing. If little things were programmed into our brains and other parts to make us robotic, wouldn't we all be the same? The point is to be different from one another, so why try to make us all alike? It might be cool at first to take pictures from your eye and store them in your brain, but the newness and uniqueness of it fade quickly because everyone can do it. If robots are where technology is headed, count me out.

20 bronze sculptures
each piece had roughly the same textures even though they were all very different. there were parts to the pieces where the bronze was extremely smooth and other parts what were rough with different reliefs. the two different textures created an edgy look to the pieces.
the only colors that were on her pieces were the bronze and a teal. i'm not quite sure how she got the teal color- whether or not it was some type of chemical rub or not- but she made the pieces more interesting to look at by having the color variation.
my favorite piece of hers was called "Caelestis", which was a low relief. it was very different from her other pieces in that it was flat. however, it was still created with the bronze and teal and was still covered with both textures. i also liked the piece "Hastings Muse" because it almost looked as if there was a hand on the side holding the entire piece together, like stabilizing it in a way.

James Walsh:

his pieces were abstract in that they all seemed like he took tubes of acrylic paint and emptied them in piles on the canvases
there were two different textures of paint used- one was smooth and glossy, almost like wax, and the other was more coarse and had a rubbery look to it.
he used many different colors, which i liked because it made them more interesting, that gave each canvas a different feel. "The Dark Fantastic" was created using mostly dark blues and makes it look like a night scene. on the other hand, "Yellow One" was painted with bright colors so the feel that is given is the opposite in that it seems more like a daytime sunny scene.
one of my favorite paintings was "Coloring". the colors used were a mix of warm and cool colors- oranges, yellows, pinks, whites, and blues. i liked it because the way he laid out the paint made it seem like he was painting a scenic view of mountains.

Ann Walsh:

12 pieces- some made with wood, some with urethane on wood, some with plexiglas, and others on a board. they were covered with either vinyl or acrylic.
every piece had stripes (except one)- either 3 or 4, all horizontal. the one exception piece had a design on the corner that made it look like there were layers being exposed.
there are many different colors used on her pieces. some are related colors on a piece, like yellows and greens, while other pieces are opposites like orange and purple.
her pieces were my least favorite because they were plain in my opinion. it wasn't anything original and although they were cool to look at, i didn't feel like they were anything special or unique.

The American society as we know it today can be described as busy, changing and always looking for new technology to get a hand on. So what would the American society look like if media was completely cut from the picture? That means there would be no communicating through text messages, online messaging programs such as AIM or ICQ or Skype. There wouldn't be any way to check your email or watch digital broadcasts. These are just a few of the things that are considered media and all of them have become a permanent fixture in many American's lives. If they were somehow null one day, Americans wouldn't know what to do (me included). We've become so dependent on these things that we have no alternatives if something did happen and media crashed. Our society as a whole would be much more slowly paced and boring in a lot of ways. People wouldn't be as connected to each other and what's going on in the world and it would be much harder to get news across to the public. We would go from a united nation to a nation with several different parts, all because media has become the backbone to our society.

My friend Meg is taking the sculpture class with Terry this semester and I've seen her latest project be created right from the start (I even helped her steal newpaper for it...) and it fits in with what we're learning perfectly. She carved a television out of weeks worth of newspapers and built a display for it. The point she was trying to make is that the media comes in all forms, television being one of them. If parents are trying to keep their kids away from violence in forms such as guns and war, then they don't have guns in the house and they don't expose them to games and other things that deal with war. However, they're getting just as much exposure of those things through the television. It's a gateway for media to pour into kid's minds as well as adults and sometimes we don't even realize it's happening. It's a scary thought, but it's the truth and digital media will most likely find a way into your life no matter how much precaution you take.

Digital media is everywhere. In the world we live in today, it's nearly impossible to go an entire day without somehow being effected by digital media. Sometimes we're so used to seeing it that we don't even notice it's there and that it's effecting us in ways. For example, digital media is a part of cell phones, the internet and television. If you're watching tv and notice a commercial for a product you will probably store the information away in the back of your mind, but events later down the line could trigger that memory and make you want the product or at the very least, just remember it. Since commercials are so short and fast, your brain is taking in the information but not necessarily using it right away. By flashing images on a screen, advertisers have an easy job trying to sell things to us in this day and age because we have learned to crave what we see. The internet is another way we're connected to the outside world and I believe it's become dependent in our society. If for some reason the internet was taken away, most of the people in America wouldn't know what to do with themselves. There would be no way to email friends or co-workers, no instant messaging, no online news, and a number of other things. Now, if cell phones crashed the same day, that's it-- we're doomed. Not being able to text or even call the people we're connected to would be disasterous. Digital media has become so intwined in our world that it's not just a luxury, it's now a necessity.

This article is from today and it's about three new executives that were hired to work for the Disney-ABC Television Group. Some of their responsibilities in the digital media practice are updating and overseeing the popular websites (mostly for kids) that are viewed every day. Also on their list of duties are keeping up with broadband, mobile offerings, VOD, etc. There's such a massive amount of opportunities for jobs dealing with digital media in today's world, and this is just one of them. Other examples are online marketing, web design and development, online account management, sales director, and a number of others. With the constant surge of technological advancements, so many new opportunities for jobs appear all the time.
